Invest in a Mermaid Pillow

I’ve been using one with my grandmother for about two years now, and she’s absolutely entranced by it. I let her watch me draw on it first, then I take her hand and draw with her. Once she gets the hang of it, she enjoys running her finger along with the sequins and watching the colors change from sparkly purple to white. Watch AJ enjoying it here.

These sensory-friendly sequined pillows were all the rage a few years ago. And today, they still make a great tool to keep in your caregiving toolbox. We got ours on clearance in the kid's section of a favorite store, and it’s been an excellent tool when my grandmother seems anxious, restless, or even just bored. Caregiving tools don’t have to be marketed towards caregivers to make a difference!

Hang Lists of “Favorites”

If you have professional caregivers, visitors, therapists, respite providers, or even just different family members coming into your caree’s living space, make lists of favorites to hang around the room!

Recently my grandmom and I compiled a list of her favorite songs to sing with others, and I hung it by her bed. It’s my hope that by hanging a list like this next to where most visitors sit (my grandmom is bedbound), they’ll easily find an activity my grandmom enjoys.

Some other ideas for lists: favorite toys, favorite outfits, favorite snacks, favorite questions, favorite games, etc. The possibilities are endless!

Buy Some Bubbles!

Here’s some food for thought: when was the last time you were angry while blowing bubbles? I don’t think I can even say the word and stay angry!

Bubbles are an instant therapy tool, and therefore an excellent item to keep in your caregiving toolbox. No matter what age your caree is, no matter what age you are, blowing bubbles is an entertaining, light-hearted, and time-passing activity that puts everyone in a better mood
